University West is looking for Postdoc in Thermal Spray Technologies

University West (better known within Sweden as Högskolan Väst, hereafter called HV) located in the town of Trollhättan is a new modern university with about 600 employees and a student strength of approximately 12000. Production Technology West (PTW) has been a prioritised research environment at the University since 2008, with an emphasis on development of production processes in the manufacturing industry and has grown from just a handful of researchers at inception to nearly 90 researchers, PhD students and other technical staff at present. Currently, the vibrant research portfolio at PTW spans the areas of Industrial Automation, Machining, Welding, Thermal Spraying and Additive Manufacturing. Thermal Spraying (TS) has always been a cornerstone of production technologies’ research at HV, consistent with the fact that it is the first and the most active academic group in the country with a focus on thermal spraying. The group is located at the Production Technology Center (PTC), which is jointly run by Innovatum Technology Park, GKN Aerospace and HV, and houses a very well-equipped engineering laboratory. The group’s current position as a global leader in TS research is facilitated by the availability of a high power axial plasma spray system, which bears promise to open new vistas in TS by enabling efficient and high-throughput deposition using liquid feedstock, and a High Velocity Air-Fuel facility, which permits deposition of very dense and well-bonded coatings with minimal thermal damage to coating feedstock. These lend a rare uniqueness and versatility to the group’s processing capabilities that are available at few TS groups worldwide. The spray facilities are also complemented by a range of allied equipment for process monitoring (in-flight particle characterisation, and in-situ coating property sensor), coating characterisation (optical & scanning electron microscopy, image analysis, residual stress, hardness, bond strength, 4-point bending strength, etc.) and performance assessment (thermal cyclic furnace and erosion testing) in diverse environments. The group has not only established close relationships with the premier international universities and institutes that pursue thermal spray research, but also has a history of undertaking and promoting cutting-edge research that dovetails with the technological needs of the Swedish industry.

The Thermal Spray Group at University West is now actively seeking applications from outstanding and highly motivated PhDs to fill a Postdoctoral position that will primarily straddle ongoing projects within the group but will also allow the selected candidate the freedom to simultaneously explore his/her own interests in complementary fields.

Role Description
The candidate eventually selected for this full-time position will be expected to actively contribute to ongoing projects dealing with development of wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant and thermal barrier coatings by High Velocity Air-Fuel (HVAF) and Suspension Plasma Spray (SPS) routes. The candidate will participate in development/preparation of feedstock materials, production of coatings and investigations of coating properties relevant to the projects. As the hands-on technical lead for the projects, the candidate’s role will involve, but not be restricted to, the following:

  • Planning of experiments, including construction of design of experiments’ matrix to investigate effect of various spray process variables and finalizing specimen geometries
  • Establishing characterization and performance assessment protocols
  • Participating in spraying experiments
  • Conduct and/or be responsible for characterization and performance evaluation of coatings
  • Conduct and/or be responsible for failure analysis of coatings
  • Analysis and interpretation of data
  • Writing and/or guiding students to write journal manuscripts
  • Explore collaborations to complement processing & characterization capabilities at HV

The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in our group's investigations on coatings with exciting function-dependent architectures that can be realized utilizing hybrid powder-liquid feedstocks. Some of our other activities on the anvil include solution precursor plasma spraying (SPPS), deposition of large-area graphene-incorporated coatings and development of coatings for targeted functionalities (photocatalytic, biocompatible, luminescent etc.)

Qualification
Candidates applying for the Post doc position should ideally have a PhD degree in Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering. Applicants with a PhD in any other branch of Engineering/Science shall also be considered if they possess appropriate experience. The position is mainly for applicants who have achieved a PhD degree not more than three years before the application deadline. Preference will be given to candidates who have relevant technical background and possession of other pertinent soft-skills will be considered meritorious (illustrative list below):

  • Processing of thermal spray coatings (APS, SPS, HVOF, HVAF)
  • Characterization of coatings (morphology, microstructure, phase constitution)
  • Tribological evaluation of surfaces (sliding/erosion/abrasion wear & COF testing,failure analysis)
  • Investigation of TBCs (oxidation, corrosion, thermal conductivity, thermal cycling, thermal shock) 
  • Data processing, evaluation and interpretation
  • Good publication record
  • Project leadership
  • Supervision of students 
  • Excellent written & oral communication skills in English
  • International research and collaborative project experience

Documented ability to independently plan and carry out experiments, as well as analyze and publish results, is expected. Hands-on experience with characterization techniques (optical & scanning electron microscopy, image analysis. EBSD, XRD, microhardness measurement, thermal conductivity etc.) and performance assessment tools (pin/ball-on-disc, rubber wheel abrasion, thermal cycling/shock test rigs etc.) will be an asset. As at least some of the experiments are expected to be conducted in close collaboration with other research groups and with industry, we are looking for a good team-player with an amicable disposition to cooperate with project partners.

Assessment criteria
The primary assessment criteria for employment will be the relevance of technical expertise and prior experience that a candidate possesses to contribute to the ongoing projects in the Thermal Spray Group at HV. In particular, candidates with background in tribological investigation of coatings will  be preferred. Familiarity with thermal spray coatings and their characterization will be an additional asset.

Terms of employment
The employment will be full-time and limited to two years.
